In the absence of telephone, internet and TV, our simple little alarm clock radio became my best friend. And old friend NPR, via Maine Public Broadcasting Network (MPBN) has become my constant companion. As I mentioned in Unplugged…Part One, I am accustomed to surrounding myself with multiple sources of simultaneous stimulation (um…wait, that sounds a bit nasty, doesn’t it???)…I am accustomed to multitasking…here, my multitasking consists of tuning in MPBN on the wee radio, turning it up loud, and wandering room to room through room, trying to identify boxes…I tried other stations, but the music got jangly and repetitive and there are no other good talk stations up here. And so began my love affair with MPBN/NPR.
There are people out there who have no access to decent TV reception, who don’t have internet, who have no good source of in-depth information on what is going on in the outside world. As a total news JUNKIE, I have been beside myself trying to keep up with Japan and Libya and the MidEast…I feel as if I have gotten some really interesting and deeper coverage than I might have if I had TV here. That and everything is interspersed with music, with readings, with discussions, with interviews. If I have to be unplugged, I want it to be with my trusty radio by my side. And I want to be sure that public radio is still out there. This is one habit I hope not to break, even when HDTV is back in my life.
OK, enough progaganda-ing…here’s really what I wanted to share today…two photos, taken about a half hour apart, this morning…what a way to start my day!
